Houston Adult Entertainment: Lawsuit may shut down midtown convenience store

HOUSTON—A convenience store on the edge of downtown Houston has become such a magnet for crime that the Harris County Attorney’s Office has filed a lawsuit pressuring the owner to either make it safe or close it down.
Law enforcement officers have been called to the Tigermart Texaco on Fannin Street more than 200 times since last August and they’ve arrested 10 people in the last year for everything from robbery to prostitution to drug crimes.  Street people routinely loiter around the property all day and night.
“There have been multiple drug arrests,” said Laura Cahill, senior assistant county attorney.  “There have been robberies.  There have been assaults, prostitution.  You’ve got a lot of transients over there.  It’s causing a big problem for people who have been going to get gas or go to the convenience store.”

Houston Adult Entertainment: State of Texas sues Katy man, says store is a ‘public nuisance’

State of Texas sues Katy man, says store is a ‘public nuisance’
The state of Texas is seeking injunctive relief after, it says, a Katy man harbors criminal activity at his downtown convenience store.
The State of Texas filed a lawsuit on Jan. 25 in Harris County District Court against Katy resident Jae Kim and 2111 Fannin St., citing a public nuisance.
The state claims Kim habitually harbors criminal activity at his Texaco convenience store, known as Fannin Texaco or Tigermart Texaco. Houston Police say since August 2011, the store generated more than 200 complaints of criminal activity, including assault, drugs, prostitution and robbery, according to the brief.
Texas is seeking injunctive relief, damages and attorney’s fees, among other things. It is being represented in the case by Houston attorney Laura Cahill.

Houston Massage Parlors: HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN HOUSTON

But what about Houston?
What is going on in Harris County, Texas to break down these
circumstances where women are forced into prostitution as
either indentured servants or kidnap victims? Today, I rode
with Constable Ron Hickman, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable, as his deputies
conducted a raid on a massage parlor in North Harris County.

Today’s raid focused on a
place called the “Diamond Spa” in the 16,000 block of Kuykendahl in
North Harris County. It could just have easily been any number of other
such “spas”. But regardless of whether they call themselves a
“spa” or “massage parlor” or a barber shop, if they offer
massage services (or any of a large number of other regulated services), this
law enforcement technique is proving to be effective.

Hickman would like to
encourage our readers to get involved in helping stop these human trafficking
and sex crimes spots. If you would like to report illicit or suspicious
massage parlors, please follow this link to his
department’s website and
make a report.

servants or kidnap victims? Yesterday, I rode with Constable Ron Hickman, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable, as his deputies conducted a raid on a massage parlor in North Harris County.

One thing that impressed me about Hickman and these operations is the efficiency upon which these are conducted. Hickman told me, “I do all the work on these Massage Parlors, Game Rooms and Curbstoning (unlicensed flipping of used car titles) with just two employees! I cut out bureaucracy and overhead in our department and manage to provide these services while cutting costs.” In these times of tight budgets, this fits well with conservative principles of reducing the size and cost of government.

Stopping Downtown from dying: Restaurant vets see hope for future rebirth in the past
The historic heart of Houston — the northern reaches of Downtown — have seen its fair share of rebirth and neglect in the last half century. As area restaurants seem to be dropping like dominoes in recent months, Treebeards co-founder Dan Tidwell and former Solero owner Arturo Boada offered CultureMap a look at the neighborhood’s storied past for a little perspective on the ever-evolving Market Square area.
Tidwell founded Treebeards with partner Jamie Mize in 1978 in a small space on Preston Street nestled between a strip club and rowdy bar. Quickly outgrowing the 30-seat location, the owners moved the business to its current site along Market Square in Houston’s second oldest building.
“I’ve lived and worked in this part of town for three decades,” Tidwell said. “I love it here and I’m committed to it.”

Houston Escorts: Students Take to Stage to Reveal Houston’s Big Problem

For months, the character, played by Foshee, was forced to sell herself for sex inside a Houston brothel.
“Guys go, they pay $50, and they get to have sex with a girl. That’s not okay with me,” said Foshee.
It only took Foshee an hour to write the play. She was inspired by a victim she met at a shelter a couple years ago.
“The man who kidnapped her would go back to her hometown and take pictures of her sister. He said, ‘If you leave I’m going to go get so and so’,” said Foshee.
The play took place inside Jones Hall on the school’s campus. An audience was sucked in by carefully placed signs reminding people slavery still exists.

“I grew up in a very nice life, and I can’t imagine having a daughter or a sister trapped in forced prostitution,” said Foshee.

Houston Escorts: Improvements Being Made In Blighted Area Of Houston

Improvements Being Made In Blighted Area Of Houston
If there was such a thing, an area of Northwest Houston near De Soto Street could get the award for most improved.
listen now:
The area known as the Antoine Corridor was so bad just a year ago that two vacant apartments had to be bulldozed because they were havens for crime and prostitution.
Now, leaders of the area are talking about doing things that would make it looks as nice as any other parts of town.
Melaney Fahey works in community affairs for the Near Northwest Management District which is spearheading the revitalization effort.
“We have just completed a Livable Center study in partnership with the Houston Galveston Area Council ,and the recommendations from that study are a way for the area to transform the Antoine Corridor into a destination that people  all over Houston would want to come to.”
