Houston Adult Entertainment: Memorial business owner accused of smear campaign, trespassing

A Cypress-area commercial property company is suing after, it says, a Memorial business owner attempted to sully its good name over a cement wall.
Roalty Properties, of Cypress, and Michael Roa filed a lawsuit on Jan. 26 in Harris County District Court against George Edward Birnbaum, doing business as The Fireplace Man in Memorial, citing trespass, private nuisance and defamation.
The suit alleges in 2011, Birnbaum had a cement wall built, without a permit, between his business, located at 5818 S.W. Freeway, and Roalty’s property. According to the brief, the wall has created a hazard for drivers and has encroached on Roalty’s property.
The plaintiffs say when they complained about Birnbaum’s wall, he embarked on a smear campaign, spreading rumors that Roa ran a brothel and was involved in other illegal activity.

Houston Adult Entertainment: Opera’s greatest fallen women: HGO’s La Traviata enjoys its place among the …

La Traviata means quite literally “the fallen woman” and that woman is Violetta Valéry, a courtesan and creature of the Parisian salon scene who falls in love with the pure-hearted Alfredo Germont. At first Alfredo must vie for the affections of Violetta with her lover, the Baron Douphol. All is not well, at first, and then all is well. Violetta and Alfredo leave Paris for bucolic country life.

Georges Bizet’s Carmen may not feature a courtesan, but the fiery (and often busty) Carmen manages to seduce a soldier who then turns smuggler but abandons him for a bullfighter, which gets her killed in the end by her spurned ex-lover.

Abbé Prévost’s 1731 novel L’histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut inspired both Jules Massenet’s and Giacomo Puccini’s operatic masterpiece Manon Lescaut as well as Kenneth MacMillan’s magnificent and wicked ballet Manon, which Houston Ballet performed recently. The plot shares many features with La Traviata, including a desirable courtesan, a young lover and a sugar daddy.

Houston Adult Entertainment: Harris County suing to shut down gas station

ABC13 Eyewitness News cameras were rolling as local police rushed to the gas station with drug sniffing dogs Thursday night. Nearby neighbors say it’s a typical scene.
“It’s definitely a nuisance and bothersome and asking for trouble,” neighbor David Swinney said.
Swinney isn’t the only one calling the Texaco a nuisance. Now, Harris County is trying to shut down the place, claiming it’s been a haven for illegal drug activity and other crimes.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Swinney said.
The county filed a lawsuit against the land owner, Jai Kim, and Fannin Food Mart, claiming they haven’t done enough to stop the problems.
According to the Harris County Attorney’s Office, Houston police have received more than 200 calls for service there in the last five months, and they’ve made several arrests for prostitution, robberies, assaults and drugs.
