… Transportation indignation has always been a fruitful subject for commuter conversation; everyone on mass transit is somehow disgruntled, and happy to share grievances. But even that happy unity is now shattered: The individual clutching the transfer next to you may be furious at the idea of building a $4 billion bridge across the Columbia, or certain that if we only built more freeway lanes, he wouldn’t have to be on the bus at all, or that the expansion of the streetcar to the east side was designed using Lionel trains.
He might even bring up the tram.
That subject, or several others, could lead to the question of the mayor, starting an argument explosive enough to drag in the bus driver. On this subject, half of Portlanders think the other half can’t take a joke, and the other half think the first group has the public morality of an unlicensed strip club.
