In Collier County, more than 1,400 cases of HIV/AIDS have been reported since tracking began in 1997 in Florida and 80 new cases were reported in Collier in 2008 alone, according to the Collier Health Department.
Nationally, an estimated 52,000 Americans each year are newly infected with HIV and eight percent of those new infections occur in Florida. About 1.7 million Americans are living with AIDS, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.
During last year’s National testing event in Collier, 163 people were tested and the goal this year is to exceed that number, Millsap said.
“I think we need to get more celebrities to get active,” Dr. Peter Bright, with Island Coast Aids Network in Lee County, said. “Kids pay more attention to singers like Beyonce or Britney.”
In general, people are not worried because of medications, managements and misconceptions that just won’t go away that only gay men, drug abusers and prostitutes get infected, he said.
