You can take Tootsies out of Highland Village, but you can’t take the socialites out of Tootsies. Seriously, like even if the landlord blacks out the windows and blocks off the front door. West Ave delays meant that the store overstayed its lease, but rather than scrap the New Year’s sale, sporting shoppers were simply ushered in the side door. For 75 percent off designer goods, who can blame them?

When the arts writer staged a protest against The Art Guys by marrying a random woman inside a strip club, we though that would be his big, attention-getting moment of the year. (Yes, there was one in 2010, too.) Then he adopted the name Devon Britt-Darby, came out as a former meth addict and sex worker and “resigned” from the paper to go on a road trip recreating a drug-fueled past journey. Now that’s performance art. We hope. Art Guys, your move.
Police are investigating after an off-duty officer shot an alleged knife-wielding man early Tuesday morning at an area Denny’s.
Clemente Vela, 32, is facing a charge of aggravated assault after he allegedly used a knife to confront an off-duty police officer at 3 a.m. on Dec. 29 at the Denny’s located at 9801 Gulf Freeway.
Investigators say the incident began when off-duty officer J. C. Lopez, of the South Central Patrol Division, visited Denny’s in the early hours of Tuesday morning with family and friends, including his brother, who had just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Vela, a co-worker and his cousin, also a Marine recently returned from Afghanistan, entered Denny’s later after a night of drinking at a local strip club, according to the news release.
Cop Shoots Man During Denny’s Altercation
Shooting at a a Denny’s.An off-duty cop eating at Denny’s shot a man who threatened him with a knife during an altercation, Houston police say.
Officer J.C. Lopez, a six-year veteran, was with a group of family and friends when another group, including Clemente Vela, 32, got into an altercation with them, HPD says. Each group included a Marine recently back from Afghanistan.
The incident happened about 3 a.m. this morning in the 9800 block of Gulf Freeway. HPD’s release pointedly notes that Vela’s group entered the restaurant “after a night of drinking at a local strip club.”
“Once inside the restaurant, a disturbance between Officer Lopez’s group and Vela’s group ensued,” HPD says. “Officer Lopez, who was unarmed, feared the disturbance would escalate and went outside to call 9-1-1 from his cell phone inside his vehicle. As he called 9-1-1, Officer Lopez saw Vela, armed with a knife, approach his family and friends.”
Glover, a former stripper, told investigators she allowed Seaton to babysit Dustyn at her home in the 7100 block of Hillcroft while she worked full time at a day care. Seaton, who was already on probation for beating a 2-year-old in Lee County, brutally beat Dustyn multiple times in what investigators said was one of the most brutal cases of child abuse they’d ever seen.

Reading this has had me crying all morning. That poor baby. His birth father was fighting for custody for his son – I can only imagine his grief right now. These two should both be sentenced to death, but should first be put in with the general population so they can treat them accordingly. I agree with anothe …

Ray Hill’s Arrest Video Tells Different Story Than What Cops Say
Security camera footage taken during a raid at the Treasures strip club shows a Houston Police Department officer shoving gay activist Ray Hill in the chest before other officers surround the 71-year-old, handcuff him, and escort him from the premises.
The video of the December 8 incident , which Hill showed to Hair Balls Monday, does not align with court papers claiming that Hill pushed the officer, resulting in Hill’s misdemeanor charge of interfering with the duties of a public servant.
Hill’s attorney, Stanley Schneider, said he gave a copy of the video to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Monday.
“What the three officers describe in their offense report clearly did not occur on the video,” Schneider said.
Tampa Bay at Jacksonville (+1) … In a post on the complacent NFL’s omnipotence, Deadspin’s Barry Petchesky said the tagline for this game was, “Because We Can’t Just Not Play It”. Which, when you think about it, encapsulates most every the Jaguars have ever played.
Minnesota at Detroit (-12) … Seriously: What the the hell is going on with Ndamukong Suh?
Chicago at Denver (-3.5) … Sometimes I like to think that Tim Tebow has an alter-ego named “Tom”. Kinda like Charlie and Hank in Me, Myself, & Irene. Where one second he’s Tim, the All-American hero that always thanks God first, and the next he’s Tom, drunkenly crashing his car into the side of a strip club where he was supposed to meet his GHB dealer. Tim Tebow’s a role model, yeah… But just wait till the world finds out about Tom.
A federal agency reducing fines levied on a Houston County manufacturing plant regarding a workplace mishap last summer. Back in July a Kathleen man was seriously burned in a flash fire outside a propane filling station at Anchor Glass near Highway 247 at Booth Road. The Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration originally set a $20,000 penalty after an investigation uncovered three major safety violations. However, after a Tuesday meeting with Anchor officials OSHA has reduced the penalty to $15,000. The federal agency says the company is working hard to correct any remaining problems.
The bond hearing for Richard Sybert, the accused gunman in an alleged murder-for-hire case in Warner Robins, will not take place today as scheduled. The move made at the request of Sybert’s attorney, and is the second delay in the procedure within the last two weeks. No reason has been given. Authorities say Sybert killed Joni Clements back in February in exchange for $1,000, a car, and a date with a stripper. The murder contract was reportedly arranged by Sybert’s father Robert on behalf of husband James Clements. Both are also facing felony murder charges.
… I remember when we shot the video for ‘I’m ‘n Luv (Wit a Stripper)’ with T-Pain, Too Short, me and Pimp C, there was a lot of us on the song,” Wall reflected on the 2006 music video. “Me and Pimp C recorded our parts together on the same day right behind each other. So we were just kicking it real hard and I remember us talking about stuff. I remember him telling me, ‘Yo Paul Wall, you was on that square sh*t writing me in jail. Wasn’t nobody else writing me. You were on that square sh*t, man.’ [laughs] I just always loved those memories. We were always laughing and joking. I just always remember that. It’s always funny. I wrote him as a fan but also as an artist trying to show support to him while he was in jail.” (SOHH)

While the show is short on plot, the antics of the store’s absentee owner give the play a bit of added depth when viewed from our present economically unstable times. Otherwise, the slight plot is made up for by the characters’ charm as the Wonderettes attempt to sing in festive cheer with familiar and forgotten holiday classics.
On the fifth day of Christmas, my Houston gave to me: Five shows for people who hate holiday shows
Though they’re elusive, some intriguing plays and performances for mature audiences do exist this time of year. Catastrophic Theatre brings Anna Bella Eema, “a ghost story for three bodies with three voices,” to DiverseWorks. Theatre Lab begins its 2011-2012 season with A Contemporary American’s Guide to a Successful Marriage @1959. Mildred’s Umbrella offers a showcase of short plays in their Museum of Dysfunction IV.
