HOUSTON. TX—In an act the club’s attorney believes is a case of government harassment, a Galleria-area strip club called Treasures is being sued by the city of Houston, which says that the amount of trafficking, prostitution and drug use occurring at the club has made it such a nuisance that they want to close it down.
“Treasures is an epicenter of illegal activity,” said Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan on Wednesday. “This is to close down one very big operation that impacts the community around it.”
The action, filed May 16 in Harris County, was actually brought by both the city of Houston and the state of Texas against Treasures corporate parent, D.Houston.
“Defendants have knowingly allowed nuisance activity under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code Chapter 125—including prostitution, narcotics, unlawfully carrying a weapon, aggravated assault, and aggravated robbery to habitually occur at Treasures,” the complaint states. “In the last four years, more than thirty (30) Chapter 125 crimes have occurred at Treasures. And, within the past 12 months, more than five gang related activities involving the combination have occurred at Treasures, which meets the definition of ‘continuously and regularly.’

Allred’s reasoning: Most exotic dancers are female. Firing a woman for being an exotic dancer, therefore, would have an adverse impact on women — and could be discriminatory.
Molly DiBianca on the Delaware Employment Law Blog says Tressler could have a case. If Tressler can show she was fired for not disclosing her side job but men at the paper weren’t, that might mean trouble for The Houston Chronicle.
At the same time, some newspapers and other media outlets hold journalists to strict standards and workplace policies. If the newspaper has followed its policies consistently, it may be tough for Tressler to emerge victorious.
Tressler’s side gig was found out by a competing alternative weekly paper. It probably didn’t help that she also wrote a blog called “Diary of an Angry Stripper,” where she described her exploits dancing at local strip clubs.

HOUSTON—A day after the Houston Press outed a reporter with an extra job as a stripper, the Houston Chronicle fired her, and now she has filed a federal sex-discrimination complaint.
Sarah Tressler, 30, may be out of one job, but she is still a writing instructor at the University of Houston. She plans to return in the fall semester and said that the university hasn’t made “a peep (about the stripping). Business as usual.” In fact she said, one of her best students confided that she too stripped. Tressler has a master’s in journalism and was born and raised in the Houston area.

Tressler also maintained a blog for two years while she danced: Diary of an Angry Stripper. Tressler said she wasn’t worried that the Chronicle would find the blog and realize she danced.

Clearly it was. The blog will soon be an e-book to be released in June. It details the ups and downs of a stripper’s life.

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) – A newspaper reporter who was fired after another publication reported that she worked part-time as a stripper says she has filed a complaint against her former employer with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging sex discrimination.
Sarah Tressler, 30, was working as a society and general assignment reporter for the Houston Chronicle and was writing an anonymous blog entitled “Diary of an Angry Stripper” when the weekly Houston Press revealed her part-time profession in an article entitled “Society Writer by Day, Stripper by Night.”
Tressler says that after the story came out earlier this year, she was fired by the Chronicle “because of a claim that I did not disclose on my employment application that I worked as an exotic dancer.”

In her blog, Tressler, who refers to herself as “Sarah,” discusses things like the odd and disgusting behavior of strip club customers, “stripper terms” and other subjects.

Reporter stripper Sarah Tressler says Treasures “has it coming,” but strip club calls human trafficking charges “ridiculous”
“Treasures has it coming, ’bout time,” former Houston Chronicle reporter stripper Sarah Tressler tweeted late Wednesday night on her Angry Stripper account, hours after city and county attorneys filed a suit against the prominent Galleria-area gentlemen’s club.

The attorneys list more that 40 reported crimes that occurred at the club since 2008 and allege that the strip club’s owners and employees “are engaged in gang related organized criminal activities” and that “human trafficking regularly occurs.” The constant criminal activity, they claim, creates a public nuisance for the surrounding communities.

“Let’s just say that 40 alleged violations in four years — that’s 10 annually or less than one a month — does not a nuisance make,” Van Huff said. “One violation a month would mean that any club in town, regardless of whether it’s a gentlemen’s club or not, would be shut down if that were the case.”
