But what about Houston?
What is going on in Harris County, Texas to break down these
circumstances where women are forced into prostitution as
either indentured servants or kidnap victims? Today, I rode
with Constable Ron Hickman, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable, as his deputies
conducted a raid on a massage parlor in North Harris County.
…
Today’s raid focused on a
place called the “Diamond Spa” in the 16,000 block of Kuykendahl in
North Harris County. It could just have easily been any number of other
such “spas”. But regardless of whether they call themselves a
“spa” or “massage parlor” or a barber shop, if they offer
massage services (or any of a large number of other regulated services), this
law enforcement technique is proving to be effective.

One thing that impressed me about Hickman and these operations is the efficiency upon which these are conducted. Hickman told me, “I do all the work on these Massage Parlors, Game Rooms and Curbstoning (unlicensed flipping of used car titles) with just two employees! I cut out bureaucracy and overhead in our department and manage to provide these services while cutting costs.” In these times of tight budgets, this fits well with conservative principles of reducing the size and cost of government.

Houston Massage Parlors: Houston becoming cartel playground
Published November 18, 2011 Houston massage parlors 0 CommentsEarlier this year, Houston mourned the loss of a Sugar Land-area teen named Elisabeth Mandala, who was brutally beaten to death in Mexico on what was later discovered to be a botched trip linked to the smuggling of illegal immigrants to the US. Other reports confirm that children as young as 12 have assisted in the transportation of marijuana. Less likely to be suspected by cops, they are coined by cartels as “the expendable,” and are typically lured in through a small amount of money.
It appears that despite the growing threat flourishing within our city’s border, the Houston Police Department has yet to actually address the obvious issue at hand. True, the task of eliminating or curtailing these criminal syndicates is easier said than done, but it’s best to take a jab at it before it gets worse — which it will.
From brothels disguised as cafes or massage parlors, to kids hired as drug couriers, Houston is becoming a playground for Mexican cartels.

Houston Massage Parlors: Jury receives case of former Houston hand surgeon
Published September 20, 2011 Houston massage parlors 0 CommentsFinally, Hennigan noted, the defense wanted to convince jurors that the assault was her fault because she confronted her husband of accused infidelity.
“What I would say to them is: Pick your pony,” Hennigan said.
Before the jury began deliberating Monday, they heard that Brown pleaded no-contest to assaulting his third wife in 2002. He was put on probation and successfully completed it. The plea bargain means Brown does not have a conviction on his record. However, jurors are allowed to consider it as he is accused of assaulting his fourth wife.
Prison possible
Because of the earlier assault, Brown faces punishment ranging from probation to 10 years in prison if he is convicted.
Jurors did not hear that Brown lost his medical license after testing positive for cocaine use, or that he visited a massage parlor the night before the incident.
Houston Massage Parlors: Jurors go home for the night in Brown assault trial
Published September 20, 2011 Houston massage parlors 0 CommentsDefense attorney Brian Wice argued this morning that jurors should hear that Rachel Brown is a woman with “a bunch of kids” and no apparent “skill set” to provide for them financially except moving from one millionaire to another.
Prosecutor Nathan Hennigan said that the relationship was just a way to “drag the complainant through the mud.”
During pretrial motions today, defense attorneys also said Rachel Brown flew to Cabo San Lucas again this weekend. Prosecutors did not answer the allegation directly, but said she is in the courthouse.
Other testimony today is expected to include a bodyguard who was with Michael Brown the night before the alleged assault.
Defense attorneys asked that jurors not hear from that bodyguard that their client was at a massage parlor that night, because it would prejudice the jury.

Houston Massage Parlors: New effort to spot human trafficking
Published August 30, 2011 Houston massage parlors 0 CommentsHOUSTON (KTRK) — Human trafficking is a significant but hard to spot problem in Houston — and across Texas. Now a new effort is underway to raise awareness, including an entire month dedicated to educating people about it.
Houston is, unfortunately, a hub for human trafficking, which usually involves young women brought here for prostitution because of our proximity to the Mexican border.
The statistics are staggering — a quarter of all trafficking victims rescued in the US are found in Texas, a large percentage in Houston. Local, state and federal representative s are supporting the Houston Rescue and Restore group’s efforts to fight this problem.
Recently 30 local cantinas and massage parlors in the area were shut down because of this problem. But for every one that is closed, authorities say there are dozens more in existence.

Houston Massage Parlors: Harris County Gets Legal Assistance On Human Trafficking
Published August 15, 2011 Houston massage parlors 0 CommentsThe women may work in massage parlors or made to walk the streets. The women are threatened physically and also told if they don’t cooperate, they’ll be turned into authorities who will put them in jail for coming to the U.S. illegally.

Ryan says a large portion of the woman caught up in this criminal web end up working in Houston area massage parlors. So those are the places the volunteer attorneys will be targeting.
“What we focus on are the businesses that again, you see them all over town the flashing massage parlor signs. Often more often than not that is a place of prostitution and more often than not, the women who are there have been brought into this country illegally and not expecting that that is the business they were going into.”

Houston Massage Parlors: Program targets criminal nuisances
Published August 4, 2011 Houston massage parlors 0 CommentsSo when county budget cuts trimmed 40 employees from his office, Ryan started developing a model for a County Attorney Community Protection Program to provide a contract assistant county attorney to local management districts.
Experienced litigator Laura Fiorentino Cahill is the first.
The three management districts, who share the same executive director, David Hawes, are sharing the $135,000 cost for the first-of-its-kind program for a year.
Cahill’s 14 years with the County Attorney’s Office includes shutting down salvage yards that were operating in residential neighborhoods.
Working with the office’s Special Prosecutions Unit, another creation of Ryan’s in 2009, Cahill will assist the districts with enforcement of state laws that hold property owners accountable for criminal activity that occurs on their premises.
Various crimes targeted
This includes activity like prostitution that might occur at nightclubs or massage parlors, drug dealing at apartment complexes or illegal dumping.
